Along w/ a small group of Dickinson faculty, I’ve been playing soccer on a regular basis since August (until it snowed, when we didn’t play for months). Two weeks ago, we formed a team to play in the college co-ed intramural soccer league. Last week, we lost 5-0 to (we found out later) the defending intramural league champs. This week, we lost 2-1 (but we scored; thank you, Bockelman!)—and that despite missing several of our regulars.
So I think we’re on the comeback trail. We’re slowly improving, shaking the rust off after our winter hiatus—even as we also incorporate new players. I think we have a decent shot at not completely embarrassing ourselves & perhaps even winning a game or two.
But. In the end. It’s really just a lot of fun. It’s been years since I’ve played any kind of organized soccer. And it’s been nice to see I still have some moves. It’s also been a great way to form camaraderie w/ a bunch of really fun & interesting folks from different academic departments. And I know the students really have a fun time going up against us on the pitch.
Hopefully next week we can record a victory. Wouldn’t that be something?
