It’s nice when you can say that your little brother is (frequently) an inspiration. He recently posted a link to this letter from the president of U of Delaware. There was an incident during a Cinco de Mayo party at U of Delaware, basically involving a fraternity & Hispanic/Latino stereotypes (ironically, it was a co-ed honors fraternity). Andy worked w/ the Campus Alliance de La Raza, which organized a town hall meeting to deal w/ the issue directly. Nice.
While there’s been no similar incident at Dickinson, there’s been discussion of Greek life expansion on campus—particularly related to “multicultural” fraternities & sororities. Despite my membership in Sigma Lambda Beta (a national, traditionally Hispanic/Latino fraternity), I’ve never been a strong supporter of the Greek “system.” But I’ve become active in the issue, particularly after a number of students sought out my support.
I won’t go into the details, of course. But I think the college is moving in the right direction. As the college has become more diverse, this was a natural progression. The real question isn’t will it happen, but how do we make it better? Particularly, how do we help shape these kinds of student organizations towards positive goals that promote a liberal arts education.
I just know I can’t be on the sideline. And I certainly can’t complain in private, if I don’t speak out in public.
