Spring break?

March 7, 2008

Ah, Spring Break! One would think this was a time to recharge batteries & rest before the rest of the semester. Alas, not for faculty. A stack of midterms & other assignments begs to be graded. Students never know how much we suffer on their behalf.

Meanwhile, it’s rainy & gloomy in Carlisle. And a long semester (16 weeks from start to the end of final exams) slowly grinds on. At least the pressure to attend classes makes for a much more flexible schedule. And a visit from my younger brother, Sam, makes for a pleasant change of pace.

Sam & I went to college together at WMU. I started graduate school the same year he went as an undergraduate. We lived together for about two years (we qualified for “family housing” from the college), before we each struck out on our own, moving into Kalamazoo’s “student ghetto.” Now he’s a director of student life in the Indiana public university system. This is his first visit out to Carlisle—mostly to visit his nephew, Javi.

Not much else is new. I’m trying to make headway on some writing projects, in addition to grading. I’ll show Sam around our quaint little town. Our little brother, Andy, will also join us. The three Centellas boys, together again. Too bad we don't have Guitar Hero at my apartment.

Back in Bolivia, things are getting dicey again. I’ll wait until I have more time to focus on it substantively to give an assessment. But basically Evo seems to be slowly pushing the eastern departments (which now include Chuquisaca) further away.
