Pronto* takes a two weeks vacation starting today. We’ll be on the road tonight to Chicago for K8’s graduation, then a swing through Michigan to visit family, then back in Baltimore two weeks later.

Illegal election in the Chaco today, Sunday 15 June. Yacuiba is electing its subprefect, instead of accepting the central department government's (in the city of Tarija) appointed subprefect.

Again, I'd note the distinction between "legality" & "legitimacy." I see no reason why local communities shouldn't be able to elect their local authorities (including sub prefects). If departments can hold autonomy referendums, then local communities can hold their own elections, too. Seems only fair.

The prefect Mario Cossio and the Corte Departamental Electoral say it's illegal and that the elected subprefect will not be recognized.

Headline:
El subprefecto elegido hoy no será reconocido
YACUIBA • A una semana del referéndum, hay otra elección. Cossío dice que es ilegal.

The story says Cossio says that the pro-autonomy leaders are tied to the national government. I don't think this is true. The Chaco has its own interests. But I don't think that matters anyway.

Evo cannot visit Tarija safely.

El Presidente carece de libre circulación
Morales no pudo llegar a Tarija, donde sectores sociales afines al Gobierno lo esperaban. Este veto interno preocupa al oficialismo y se anuncian medidas.

This is no surprise. It's just taken as given in Bolivia right now, that Evo cannot go to half the country. But I think it's worth commenting on. The government does not have effective routine control of half the country.

It was really nice to see you and Kate and Javi! You have the happiest baby I've ever seen!
