It’s been ten days since I’ve posted any updates. Clearly, I’ve been quite busy w/ teaching & other university responsibilities (there’s a lot going on), an increasingly precocious 10-month-old son (that’s a good thing), holiday planning, getting sucked into American politics & the “global economic crisis,” and trying to focus on “work-related” writing projects.
To those looking here for Bolivian politics updates: A lot has happened in ten days! Evo continues to prepare for a referendum next month on the new/modified draft constitution in January, which would pave the road for general elections in December 2009 (and potential rivals of all stripes are already emerging). The state of siege in Pando is scheduled to be lifted in a few days (in part because the electoral court refused to go forward w/ the constitutional referendum otherwise). In the meantime, Evo has increased his attacks against the US government, most recently by expelling the DEA & ending Bolivia’s cooperation in the US drug war. All the while, the world economic crisis is increasingly affecting Bolivia, even as the country is left out of trade deals, first w/ the US, most recently w/ the EU. I apologize for not keeping my blog up to date, but I know several others have picked up the slack.
I’ll try to keep up w/ posting, but holiday season & my increasingly squeezed schedule will mean you won’t get day-by-day accounts. That’s probably for the best. I’ll try to post regular, if infrequent, reflections on events, rather than just summarizing press reports. Hopefully increased quality will make up for decreased quantity.
Also, my first peer-review article has finally come out (I thought it was coming out in February). If you get a chance, check out the October issue of The Latin Americanist, published by SECOLAS (Southeastern Council on Latin American Studies).
What is the title of your article?
As the father of a precocious 18 month-old toddler, and yes it is a good thing, kudos to you for putting in the time to be with your boy.
Oh, the article is titled: "From 'Parliamentarized' to 'Pure' Presidentialism: Bolivia after October 2003"
It was originally a conference paper I presented at the MPSA in April 2007.
