Holidays reading list

At the end of the semester (and, yes, I’m done!) I like to give my students some ideas for holiday reading. After months of studying, it’s important to switch gears a little bit & read for pleasure. Here’s my recommendations at Pronto* Recommends.

I am always interested to see other people's book lists--I will have to look into some of the ones I haven't heard of (I really like Eats, Shoots and Leaves). The Kite Runner, for whatever reason, is one of those books I ultimately set aside because I found it dull, which I guess makes me an outlier.

Over the years, students have asked me to recommend books. At first, it was books to read over the summer to prepare for grad school. Then, it was books to read for fun over the holidays. So I like to just put together a longer list, then give specific recommendations to specific students later.

I saw Kite Runner as a movie, found the movie really great (it was the only movie I saw in a theater this year, come to think of it - and in a dutch theater even).

Tried reading the Alchemist once. Not my cup of tea. I'll probably read a russian author over the break, possibly Solochov and simply because it is in my box of books I got from my parents.
