Unless they give you $2,300, vote them outPosted October 2, 2008 | Permalink | Comments (9)Tags: Baltimore economics elections House Maryland politics Senate USA So the Senate passed a (oh so slightly) modified bailout package 74-25-1. Both of my (Maryland) senators voted for it. Unfortunately, neither is up for reelection this year. Now it’s up to the House. If my representative (John Sarbanes) votes for it, I will vote for his Republican challenger in November (and I don’t currently even know his/her name). Why? Because I want my $2,300! (my estimated share of the $700 billion).

We hoped on Light Rail & rode down to Inner Harbor. It wasn’t nearly as large as I had imagined, but it was still a lot of fun. And Javi was a good sport. Baltimore ComiconPosted September 23, 2008 | PermalinkTags: Baltimore comic books On a lighter note, I’ll be attending my first Comic Con this weekend. One of the perks of living in Baltimore is that it hosts a number of interesting conventions. So Javi & I will be attending the Baltimore Comicon on Saturday. A special thanks to J. Edmund, who scored me an special pass.
APSA teaching conference in BaltimorePosted September 19, 2008 | PermalinkTags: academic conference Baltimore political science teaching The upcoming APSA Teaching & Learning conference is scheduled for Baltimore (February 6-9, 2009). The deadline for proposals is September 30. I don’t normally get to attend such a niche conference; but now that it’s being held in my town, I plan to attend. Just not sure if I want to write a proposal about “American Idol in the Classroom” or one of my in-class simulations.
Bolivia electoral court in jeopardyPosted September 2, 2008 | Permalink | Comments (12)Tags: Bolivia elections electoral court Evo Morales politics In an interesting twist, MAS supporters issued a call for the resignation of José Luis Exeni (the president of the National Electoral Court), calling him a “traitor to the social movements” for his statement that the CNE couldn’t go forward w/ the elections Evo called for by executive decree because of legal obstacles. Last night, the CNE issued a statement making clear that elections must be convoked by parliament, not by executive decree. Earlier, Exeni (named to the post by Evo) was criticized by the opposition, who accused him of being too sympathetic to MAS.
Oruro prefect future uncertainPosted August 26, 2008 | Permalink | Comments (3)Tags: Bolivia Oruro politics prefects recall election Just a quick note during a break in the project conference at UCSD. Since this is a mini-conference on electoral system, I’ll ignore the issue of the current bloqueos across Bolivia (especially around the gas-rich Chaco region). The interesting thing is that the future of Oruro’s prefect is uncertain. W/ the final results of the recall referendum, Alberto Aguilar (MAS) won 50.85%. That’s a slim majority, but according to the actual rules of the recall, he came up a bit short (I can’t now remember how short). Of course, the opposition had fought for the rules to be changed to accept only a simple majority; we'll see now whether partisanship overrides principle.
Javi loves bachata/reggaetonPosted August 21, 2008 | PermalinkTags: Baltimore Butcher's Hill music Peruvian restaurant Last weekend, Andy & Saloumeh came to visit (his birthday’s coming up). After enjoying the surprisingly excellent Indian food from our downstairs café (yes, our apartment building has a restaurant on the first floor) on Friday, we went downtown to Butcher’s Hill for some Peruvian food at El Rinconcito Peruano.
